Chinese Shiwan Mudman Immortal Riding Foo Lion Dog stock #JHRedFuMud

A large shiwan (shekwan) sculpture of an Aesthetic riding a pomegranate red foo lion. The glaze is thick and glass-like with a natural crackle that only comes from age. The clay’s color and some ash residue (a good thing) indicate that this piece was fired in a dragon kiln about 5 - 15 miles upstream from Foshan. The Immortal’s robes are glazed with a rich translucent celadon color. There are two peaches at his side and he is holding a single peach in his upright hand. The detail of the foo lion’s mouth is amazing. Not only does he have his front teeth and fangs, but the artisan added molar teeth and a brown tongue. The lion’s red glaze was so thick that it ran pooled at his feet when fired. The only damage to the sculpture is on the backside of the peach where a leaf broke off (see last photo). This impressive sculpture is in very good condition to excellent condition and measures in at 18 inches high x 12.75 inches long. Late Republic Period, 1940 dating. |
