Japanese Late Edo Lacquer Tray with Mountain Stream and Cranes stock #JHbestTray
Japanese lacquer tray with a mountain stream and cranes in a raised landscape scene. This small/medium tray is about the best as they come in displaying many types of lacquer techniques including Maki-e, Hiramaki-e, and Takamaki-e with superb colors and fine gold nashiji work having shaped corners with concave edges. The cranes, pine trees, and mountains are all done in raised relief with the cranes showing incredible details. The stream flowing down from the top is rendered in several finely painted colors with sprinkled lacquers throughout. The underside has well crafted feet and is done in a copper gold color nashiji lacquer. Any serious collector would be very pleased to have this tray. In excellent condition, this rare find measures 9.5” long by 7” wide.
