Japanese Bronze Dragon Hibachi with Monkeys, Meiji stock #L8J2bronzDra
$1,800
One of the most spectacular Japanese bronze hibachi's ever encountered and quite unusual in every way. Massive and weighing a solid 18 lbs. this hibachi features a well sculpted dragon that clutches the celestial pearl of wisdom that effort-sly glides about the wind that whips about its body, three monkeys in varying poses or positions support this cauldron-like monstrosity. The dragon wraps completely around the hibachi and is striking in its detail; tendrils and spine protrude and the head swings out from the side. This unique treasure displays a fair amount of verdigris that is both attractive and serves as a testament of its great age. Condition is excellent, save a 'L' shaped stress crack at the lip that is about 4.5 cm long; this is due the shrinkage of the bronze. There is a slight depression of the lip at the crack-line. It is obvious that this hibachi was indeed used for its intended purpose of heating a Japanese home and is unlike many others that display a lifeless pristine never used quality, rustic, and is well defined in terms of artistry and presentation. There is a mark that reads Da' Nippon and is dated to the early Meiji period C. 1870's. The hibachi measures 10" (25.4 cm) high by 11" (27.9 cm)wide. |
