Rare Chinese Changsha Kiln Jar, Tang Dynasty 9th C stock #L8J2changsJa

This is a unique and rare offering of a highly desirable Changsha kiln jar. Based on archaeological records, Changsha wares originated and were developed from the foundations of the Yue Zhou kilns which were built prior to the Tang Dynasty in the same region. Usually these are characterized by such components such as under-glazed brown and green motifs and with molded design in relief, appliqué designs or impressed designs in relief and also incised or carved designs. They are quite distinct from the Yue Zhou green wares which are monochrome. The unique features of this jar has to do with being a good size olive/brown glaze jar that is more like yue ware, but it is interesting to note that the paste and glaze is actually one of the rarest Changsha kiln products that exist. This is due the absence of any under-glaze brown or green decoration as well as being void of any molded and incised decorative motifs. It is dated to the 9th century of the Tang dynasty. The jar has a few minor chips at the mouth, but is free from any hairlines or other damage. The glaze is well intact, and it measures 11.43 cm x 9.60 cm or 4.5" x 3 7/8" Note: We have listed for sale a matching bird water dropper (see item #842294) to the jar, one may observe the same paste color and texture, as well as the nearly identical glaze color. |
